What is an athletic scholarship in the USA?
A USA athletic scholarship is financial aid awarded by an American university to a student-athlete in exchange for joining the university team. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be an international champion to qualify.
What an athletic scholarship covers
Depending on the amount awarded, your scholarship may cover:
- Tuition fees: $15,000 to $60,000 per year depending on the university
- On-campus housing: $8,000 to $15,000 per year
- Meal plan: $4,000 to $8,000 per year
- Books and supplies: $1,000 to $2,000 per year
- Mandatory health insurance: $2,000 to $3,000 per year
- Administrative fees: variable
Total cost of one academic year in the USA: between $35,000 and $80,000.
With a 70% scholarship, you may only pay $10,500 to $24,000 per year. With a full scholarship (100%), your studies are fully covered.
Different types of athletic scholarships
| Scholarship type | Coverage | Estimated remaining cost | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full scholarship | 100% | $0 (personal expenses only) | 15% |
| High scholarship | 70–90% | $5,000 – $15,000 | 30% |
| Mid scholarship | 40–70% | $15,000 – $30,000 | 40% |
| Partial scholarship | 20–40% | $30,000 – $40,000 | 15% |
ProcessUS tip: Most French athletes we place receive between 50% and 80% scholarships. A 60% scholarship at a $45,000 university leaves only $18,000 per year to pay, often comparable to or cheaper than private schools in France.

How to Get an Athletic Scholarship in the USA?
In the United States, college sports are organized by three major organizations, each with different scholarship rules.
NCAA: National Collegiate Athletic Association
The NCAA is the most recognized and prestigious organization, with around 1,100 universities across three divisions.
NCAA Division I
- Level: Highest level
- Scholarships: Full or partial
- Main sports: Football and basketball
- Examples: UCLA, Stanford, Florida, Duke
NCAA Division II
- Level: Competitive
- Scholarships: Mostly partial
- Advantage: Great balance between sports and academics
NCAA Division III
- Athletic scholarships: No
- Academic scholarships: Yes
- Advantage: Strong academic focus
NAIA
The NAIA includes around 250 universities and often provides more flexibility for international student-athletes.
- Athletic level: Comparable to NCAA Division II
- Scholarships: Generally easier to obtain for international student-athletes
- Main advantage: More flexible eligibility rules, ideal for non-traditional athlete profiles
- Scholarship budget (tennis example): 5 full scholarships per team
- Best for: Regional-level athletes looking for a strong balance between academics and sports
NJCAA
Junior Colleges are two-year colleges and often serve as a strategic pathway before transferring to NCAA or NAIA programs.
- Duration: 2 years → Associate Degree → Transfer to a 4-year university (NCAA/NAIA)
- Scholarships: Available and often generous
- Cost: Much more affordable ($15,000–$25,000 per year)
- Strategy: 2 years in NJCAA with a scholarship → Transfer to NCAA D1 or D2 with a stronger scholarship
- Best for: Athletes with a limited budget, athletes looking to improve their athletic level, or students wanting to strengthen their academic profile
| Organization | Universities | Athletic Scholarship | Athletic Level | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NCAA D1 | ~350 | ✅ Yes | Very high | Regional and national-level athletes |
| NCAA D2 | ~300 | ✅ Yes | Intermediate | Strong regional athletes |
| NCAA D3 | ~450 | ❌ No (academic scholarship ✅) | Competitve | Academic focus |

FAQ: Your 3 questions about USA athletic scholarships
Can you lose your athletic scholarship during the year?
You cannot lose your scholarship because of an injury, as this is protected by NCAA rules. You can lose it in cases such as insufficient academic results (GPA < 2.0), serious disciplinary violations, or criminal activity. It is very rare to lose a scholarship due to poor athletic performance, as coaches understand performance fluctuations.
Can international students get athletic scholarships in the USA?
Yes, international student-athletes can absolutely receive athletic scholarships in the United States. NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA programs recruit thousands of international athletes every year. Coaches evaluate athletic level, academic records, eligibility and overall fit with the team. Many international students combine athletic scholarships with academic scholarships to reduce the total cost of studying in the U.S.
Can you turn professional after university?
Yes, many French athletes become professional after their university career. Famous examples include Arthur Rinderknech (tennis, Texas A&M), Maxime Cressy (tennis, UCLA), Ben Shelton (tennis, University of Florida), and Danielle Collins (tennis, University of Virginia). The university system allows athletes to improve athletically while earning a degree as a backup if a professional career does not take off.
