When should you start the process to move to the U.S.?
The college placement process in the United States takes between 10 and 12 months. To maximize your chances of receiving an athletic scholarship and getting into the best possible university, you should start 12 months before your intended enrollment date.
Ideal timeline for starting college in August 2027
- May 2026: Begin the process, athletic and academic profile evaluation
- July–November 2026: TOEFL/SAT preparation, creation of sports highlight videos
- November 2026–January 2027: Take the tests (TOEFL, SAT/Duolingo)
- February–May 2027: Contact universities, negotiate scholarship offers
- May–June 2027: Accept offers, complete NCAA/NAIA registration
- June–August 2027: Apply for the F-1 visa, prepare for departure
- August 2027: Arrive on campus in the United States
Important: Starting too late (less than 6 months before enrollment) drastically reduces your university options and your chances of receiving a strong scholarship.
The 7 essential steps to study and play sports in the USA
Step 1: Evaluation of your athletic and academic profile
Before starting any process, it is essential to evaluate your student-athlete profile to identify the American universities suited to your level.
Athletic criteria evaluated:
- Competition level (tennis ranking, basketball championship, etc.)
- Recent performances and achievements
- Potential for development
- Match/competition videos
Academic criteria evaluated:
- Overall GPA (minimum 13-14/20 recommended)
- English level
- Degrees obtained (Baccalaureate, Bachelor’s degree, etc.)
- Motivation and professional project
ProcessUS Consulting carries out this evaluation to identify your potential for a USA athletic scholarship.
Step 2: Taking admission tests (TOEFL, SAT, Duolingo)
To join an American university, you must prove your English proficiency and academic skills through standardized tests.
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- Objective: Evaluate your academic English level
- Duration: 3-4 hours
- Score: 0 to 120 points (minimum 60-80 required depending on universities)
- Sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing
- Validity: 2 years
Alternative: The Duolingo English Test
- Faster: Only 1 hour
- At home: Can be taken from your computer at home
- Accepted: By more than 4,000 American universities
The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)
- Objective: Evaluate your mathematics and English skills
- Duration: 3 hours
- Score: 400 to 1600 points
- Sections: Mathematics, Evidence-Based Reading and Writing
- Important: Not mandatory for international students but strongly recommended to increase your scholarship chances
ProcessUS advice: Plan for 3-4 months of TOEFL preparation. You can retake these tests several times to improve your score.
Step 3: Preparing the application file
Your application file must convince American coaches to recruit you. It includes:
Academic documents
- High school/university transcripts (translated into English)
- Degrees obtained (Baccalaureate, Bachelor’s degree)
- TOEFL/Duolingo and SAT scores
- Motivation letter in English
- Recommendation letters (teachers, coaches)
Athletic documents
- Detailed athletic CV: achievements, rankings, performances
- Match/competition videos: 5-10 minutes of highlights (CRUCIAL)
- Recent statistics
- Recommendation letters from coaches
Common mistake: Poor-quality or badly edited sports videos can ruin your chances. ProcessUS supports you in creating professional videos that showcase your game.
Step 4: Registration with the NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Center
To play at an NCAA or NAIA university, you must be declared eligible by the corresponding organization.
NCAA Eligibility Center
- Registration on eligibilitycenter.org
- Validation of your academic and athletic results
- Issuance of an essential NCAA ID
- Processing time: 4-8 weeks
NAIA Eligibility Center
- Registration on playnaia.org
- Process generally faster and more flexible than the NCAA
Important: This step is MANDATORY and must be completed as early as possible. Without eligibility certification, you cannot play or receive an athletic scholarship.
Step 5: Research and negotiation with universities
This is the most strategic step of the process.
- Identify universities that match your athletic level, academic level and budget
- Contact the coaches of college teams
- Generate interest: coach responses, phone calls, virtual visits
- Negotiate scholarship offers: compare financial packages
- Make your final choice and sign your Letter of Intent
Why ProcessUS makes the difference: We maintain established relationships with more than 500 universities and personally know hundreds of coaches. Our network accelerates your placement and increases your scholarship offers by 30 to 50% on average.
Step 6: F1 student visa application
Once accepted into an American university, you must obtain your F1 visa to study legally in the United States.
F1 visa application process
- Receive Form I-20: Official document sent by your university
- Pay the SEVIS fee: $350 (around €320)
- Complete Form DS-160: Online visa application
- Pay the visa fee: $185 (around €170)
- Schedule an appointment at the United States Embassy (Paris or another consulate)
- Prepare the required documents
- Attend the consular interview
Required documents for the visa interview
- Valid passport (at least 6 months after the expected end of your studies)
- Original Form I-20
- Appointment confirmation
- US-format ID photo
- University acceptance letter
Step 7: Preparing for departure
The final months before your departure are dedicated to logistics:
- Flight booking: Arrive 1-2 weeks before the start of the semester
- International health insurance: Mandatory (often provided by the university)
- Vaccinations: Check the university requirements
- US bank account: Easier to open once on site
- International driving permit: Useful in many states
- Luggage: Plan for sports equipment + personal belongings
